Roy Mitchell, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Mitchell is a Licensed Psychologist with training and experience working with individuals with known or suspected neurologic disorders, severe mental illness, mood disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders. He has worked extensively with at-risk youth through home-based therapy for school-referred clients, brain-injured patients utilizing neuropsychological services, and diverse prison populations in inpatient and outpatient units. Dr. Mitchell is also a published author on topics of stress and cognition in Black men.

Dr. Mitchell has training in individual, family, and group interventions for various behavioral health concerns. His theoretical orientation is considered an assimilative approach. He conceptualizes from a psychodynamic base because that theory corresponds to his natural way of thinking about people. However, he integrates other orientations to meet client needs, primarily focusing on cognitive behavioral therapy. He tends to focus on conscious/unconscious thinking and perceptions, limiting a client's ability to change an issue. He gauges if a person is impulsive (too much Id control), overly restricted (too much superego control), or uses common defense mechanisms such as aggression, repression, and projection. He typically assesses these psychodynamics through the technique of interpretation, where much of the insightful information gathered may be linked to relational patterns, including transference with him as the therapist.
